Thesis Templates

The Library supports templates created by the Assistant for Theses in MSWord (old and new templates).
Students are encouraged to attend a "Using the (New) Thesis Template" Workshop to see how the template works.
Science students may use the LaTeX template (see section below).
Students are responsible for consulting the documetation and having the correct information/details in their documents.

What is a template? Why use a template?

Open Office (OO) Template

Though we recommend students use Word (which in fall 2011 is $100 for students via the bookstore), please come to a Using the Thesis Template Workshop.  In the workshop, you will see how to apply styles and which styles to apply where.  During the workshop you can also express any specific needs you might have and new styles will be created for these at that time.  After the workshop, should you choose to use this program, you will be able to download it from the web and apply the skills you learned in the workshop.

Since February 1, 2011, two students have come for help with OO.  The program has been a bit cumbersome with creating or modifying styles so, if we can get your needs taken care of in advance at the workshop, that might just do for your purposes.

LaTeX Template

Computing Science has said they haven't anyone to support their Latex template—so we would greatly appreciate those students who are competent programmers and which have fixed the issues in the LaTeX template asking Computing Science to adopt their adjusted template and make it available in place of the current version.

Students who choose to use the Latex templates must be sure to correct the Page Details and the Common Errors that happen with this template before they submit their theses.  Please see the following links.

  1. Computing Science's LaTeX template
  2. Common Errors / Page Details (see column 3 at http://www.lib.sfu.ca/theses),

If you would like someone's help in fixing the problems in your Latex-based thesis, the Library knows of someone who is willing to fix issues on a contact basis (contact ).
