HelpDocs: Page Number Troubleshooting

A reminder that the Approval page = ii, Abstract page = iii, and Chapter 1/Introduction = 1.

  1. My page number "1" is now beginning with the number "11".
All you need to do is put your cursor on the first page (p. 11), go into Page Numbers > Format Page Numbers and change Continue From Previous Section to Start at 1.

  2. For some strange reason the other day, the page numbering in my thesis went from page 97 to page 2 and I can't seem to fix it. Do you have any suggestions?
Yes. It sounds like you've added a section break and, because the page numbers are set to start at 2 in the first section, it's likely the same for the last section. What you need to do is put your cursor in the last section, go into the page number format, and check Continue From Previous Section.

  3. The Preliminary pages numbers are cut-off—for example, at the bottom of the page, pages xvi, xvii, xviii are appearing as xvi, xvi, xvi, though they apear correctly in the Table of Contents
This problem comes from an older version of Word (the old Library templates used this feature) and seems to be part of the incompatibilities with the more recent versions (2007 and later). Rather than inserting the page numbers via the footer function, they were inserted via the old version's menu, which inserted the page numbers in boxes. Now these boxes don't get wider as the page numbers expand.

To fix this, go into Insert, choose Footer, Edit Footer, select the page number box, and delete it.  From the Footer Design Menu, choose Page Number, Bottom of Page, Plain Number 2 (centred) and, if another paragraph marker appears in the footer (turn on Show/Hide--the button from the Home Ribbon, Paragraph section), delete it.  Press Next Section and, if necessary, do this there as well.
