News Resources

This guide is intended to assist SFU faculty, students, and staff in finding and using news information resources, and it lists selected print and electronic information sources pertaining to news media.

Newspapers & news magazines in the SFU Library

If you are looking for a specific article and you know the title of the newspaper or magazine, search the library catalogue to determine if the publication is available online or in print/microform format at one of our campus libraries. For example, if we were searching for an article in the Vancouver Sun, we'd see the following screen, which shows we have the Sun in three formats.

The first title listed is for our print edition. The second is for a microfilm edition, which we use as our archival copy. The third record for the Sun takes you to a record with links to our electronic editions.

If you are looking for the print edition, click on the first title to see the detailed record.

You will notice that all three SFU campus libraries subscribe to the Vancouver Sun. Surrey keeps only the current month whiile Bennett & Belzberg libraries keep the print copy until the microfilm arrives, usually about 3 months.

Current magazines and newspapers are shelved by the title of the publication, in alphabetical order.

  • At Bennett Library, current newspapers and news magazines are found on the 6th floor.
  • Belzberg Library at SFU Vancouver shelves the current newspapers on a spinner (located near the front window seating area) and older issues and news magazines on the journal shelves
  • Surrey Library keeps the current two months of major dailies with their journals.

If we have a microfilm subscription to a newspaper, we discard the print copy after the microfilm copy arrives. Microfilm is stored in cabinets in the Microforms Collection at the Bennett Library and at Belzberg.

You may also find your article online. For example, the following catalogue record shows we have access to two electronic versions of the Vancouver Sun: from LexisNexis (from 1991 forwards) and from Canadian Newsstand (from 1987, with a block on access to the last two issues). Click on the link to get to the online editions.
