Can not login to download research articles

March 30th, 2015

Q: The library search engine for articles is down yet again. please fix this problem! can not log into any databases or download research articles. A: I'm sorry you are having problems with accessing the library's resources. Can you please try clearing your browser cache / cookies/ history and try again? http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cache If that doesn't help can you help us pinpoint the issue by providing more information:

  1. When you say the "Library Search Engine", do you mean the search on the home page?
  2. When try to log in, are you getting an error message? What does it say?
  3. Are you accessing remotely or are you on campus?
  4. Can you give a few examples of resources that aren't working for you so I can try to pin down the exact issue? For example, what was your search from the Library Search Engine, so I can try to replicate the issue?

The Library was experiencing issues with the remote access server the past few days, but it should be resolved. Thank you, Janice ---------------------------------------- Janice Banser, Systems Librarian Simon Fraser University Library

Online Journal Access to Staff?

March 30th, 2015

Q: Hello, I'm a staff member within External Relations. I understand that as a staff member I can also get access to the library. I'm trying to access an online journal from Sage Publications but it appears that in Canada it is only available through Cybera (which I'm not familiar with). Here is the link:
http://jsi.sagepub.com/login/shibboleth?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fjsi.sagepub.com...

A: Thank you for your email.
Would you please provide more information, such as how you access to the journal?
You can access Journal of Studies in International Education via Library catalogue: http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CJDB4/BVAS/journal/152406
Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information.
Regards,
Elaine

Online Access

March 30th, 2015

Q: I'm trying to get articles though SFU Library's online services. Most of them I am accessing just fine, but for two I get as far as the following pages, and then they say I don't have access to the PDFs :-(
http://jcc.sagepub.com/content/45/4/534.full.pdf+html or http://jcc.sagepub.com/content/45/4/534
http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid...
I tried Ask a Librarian, and they said that they had no problems, so to contact you. Please help!

A: Thank you for the email. I also have no problems getting the PDF format of articles. Would you please try to clear cache and cookies of the browser and try again?
Thanks,
Elaine

Science Literacy Week

February 10th, 2015

Q: I'm the founder of science literacy week, an event designed to promote the public understanding of science. Held this last September in Toronto, the idea was to communicate the wonder of scientists and the their work through book displays, links to great content, lectures and hands on activities. A link to all the festivities can be found here: http://guides.library.utoronto.ca/scienceliteracy
For next year, I'm in the process of trying to turn it into the largest event of its kind in Canada, both through reaching out to institutions nationwide and through broadening the scale and scope of events. Thus far I'm (extremely!) happy to report that over 110 such institutions representing every province and territory have shown early support! The week is scheduled for September 21st-27th of 2015.
One of the main things I'm trying to accomplish is to have a Toronto scaled event in every city in Canada, combining school boards, Universities, public libraries and science organizations to present a comprehensive celebration of science to the public. Be that through similar activities to what we did this past September, or better yet through passion projects and ideas of yours, I would absolutely love to have the SFU library system be a part of this. I hope you see merit in the idea, and I hope to hear from you soon to see if and how we can work to make this the success I know it can be. Until then, thanks for your time and have a lovely rest of the day!
Sincerely.
P.S; I'm happy to say that thus far the Vancouver area has been the most participatory in the country with over 15 institutions in the region involved. I hope you'll continue in that tradition
and I hope to hear from you soon!

A: Thanks for your email and sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I'm very interested in science literacy week. Do you have any ideas in the works for 2015? Any thoughts on how this will translate to a national program? Count us in for something. There are a number of science librarians here at SFU and I've spoken to one of them and will share ideas with the others, including the one at the Fraser branch in Surrey. The downtown campus of SFU has no science classes, but I will share info with Belzberg as well.

Thanks,
Jenna

Mac Computer Upgrades

February 3rd, 2015

Q: Could you upgrade the x code simulators and documentations on the iMacs. (Click on x code, preferences and then downloads. That'll show you all the available updates)

A: The Mac computers in the library are managed by IT services and the Library is unable to make any changes on them. Your question was forwarded onto the person looking after the Macs, his reply is below:

The Xcode that is currently installed is the most recent version for the operating system (OS X 10.8.5) installed on the Macs. Until we can update them to Managed Mac V3 (which requires an update to OS X 10.9.x) it will remain the most recent version that can be installed. Any upgrades will most likely happen during the semester break.

Use of copyright images?

January 20th, 2015

Q: Whom to I contact at the library to ask about obtaining copyright permission to include an image in my MA paper?

A: The SFU Copyright Office can answer your questions and offer assistance with any copyright issues, including getting permission to include images in your thesis. You can reply directly to me, or email copy@sfu.ca (which will reach me as well as Don Taylor, the Copyright Officer). You should also take a look at the copyright website (copyright.sfu.ca) and particularly the section on theses: http://www.lib.sfu.ca/copyright/students/thesis#sfu-top; our FAQs may answer some of your questions as well.

Jennifer Zerkee
